Hyenas and canids

Hyenas are more closely related to felines than they are to canids! ...somewhat surprising.

Yann, do you have a citation for this? Seems odd..

Matt, I just tried to find the website where I found this tree and I can't find it anymore. I think I got it after searching through some links on this website from PBS about a Nature show on the evolution of domestic dogs.

I bet you can find the information in a big phylogenetic tree on wikipedia or something. Sorry can't be of more help. Let me know if you find anything to the contrary of what this tree shows.

They are more closely related to Aardwolves, Mongooses, Meerkats and cat like carnivores. Hyenas part from being related to dogs in the sub species order Caniformia ( canines) and Feliformia (felines).
